Panto clean sweep for Erwood

It was a clean sweep for Erwood YFC in the National Panto finals as they picked up first prize and Best Actor and Best Actress awards.

And it was a family affair for the brilliant Brecknock club – the individual awards went to Samuel and Lydia Powell, with Samuel also writing, producing and choreographing the Return to Neverland production.

Lydia, whose Tinkerbell wowed the judges, said: “This is the happiest time of my life!

“Sam has wanted this since he was 10 years old – he was always writing plays in our living room that we had to put on!”

“We’ve always come up to Blackpool to watch the performing arts since I was eight,” explained Samuel, who played Captain Hook in his own production. “Since then, I’ve always had a thing for it.”

And that love of performing arts has taken in the whole family. Lydia said: “It’s bigger than Christmas for us!”

Samuel has created productions for his club for the last few years but has never got past the first round.

“In the past, I’ve made the mistake of doing things that interest me, but aren’t necessarily right for a YFC audience,” said Samuel. “This year, I really had in mind what the audience would like. I think that’s what made the difference.”

Judges said that the whole production was engaging and entertaining with “high energy from an enthusiastic cast whose enjoyment shone through”.
