Senior Member of the Year helps small club make its mark
Elwick YFC faced closure a few years ago but they are definitely back and stamping their mark on the YFC map after one of their members clinched Senior Member of the Year.
Katie Sanderson, 24, bagged the highly fought after title after competing in the national finals in Blackpool during the Annual Convention weekend.
To reach the final, Katie had to win at county and Northern Area rounds and said she couldn’t “put into words” how proud and honoured she was to win the overall competition.
“I come from such a small club – with only around 16-20 members – and we class ourselves as a little family,” said Katie. “A few years ago we nearly closed and to bring us back to where we are now and to have one of their members as Senior Member of the Year, well, I think they will be proud too!”
As part of the national final, Katie and the other six finalists were interviewed privately by a panel of three judges and then faced a public interview on the stage during the Pantomime finals.
“I have always done Public Speaking competitions, starting as a junior but nothing could prepare me for standing on stage yesterday in the Pantomime finals in front of a huge audience,” said Katie who admits she is willing to give anything a go, including taking on officer roles or organising events.
She admits that YFC has changed her life and has always been there for her. “To say I wouldn’t be the person I am without YFC would be a huge understatement,” she added.
Cennydd Jones from Ceredigion YFC came second in the competition, with Holly Howell from Louth YFC coming third. In fourth place were Kate Edginton from Gloucestershire FYFC, Emily Blount from Hampshire FYFC, Greg Colebrook from Cambridgeshire FYFC and Lucy Bright from Shropshire FYFC.
