Tarka Group YFC on song

Tarka Group YFC from Devon are the winners of the National Choir Finals at this year’s NFYFC Annual Convention.

Judges said that standards continue to improve in the National competition and Tarka Group YFC came top out of eight entries.

Each choir had to perform two songs – the first of which had to have been in season five of Glee with the second one a contrast of their choice.

Judges – and the packed crowd at the Empress Hall in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens – were impressed with Tarka Group YFC’s rendition of Simple Minds’ Don’t You Forget About Me and One Day More from Les Miserables.

Jessica Squire, who is a professional dancer who also sings and acts, helped the team with their performance.

She said: “We’re self-led – we don’t have a musical or artistic director. There isn’t one person making decisions, it comes from all of us.

“This group are amazing – they’re so inspiring. To think that some of them didn’t even know what scales are. But the way that everyone comes together and sings together is amazing – it’s the energy and the potential of the group.”

“Jess has been unbelievable,” said Rob Hill. “To have someone who is so good at what she does has been amazing.

“We thought we might come second or third but we can’t believe we won.”
